The U.S. is an agriculture powerhouse, but the U.S. economy overall is highly diversified, such that agriculture accounts for only 0.83 percent of GDP. Farm states, though, live on in political consciousness as vital economic interests that must be accommodated in policymaking.

Some states do have higher shares of their economic output in the agricultural sector, but even there, the percentages are low.
